Business supplies and services: Digital job cards for wayfinding companies

Digital job cards for wayfinding companies that give fitters the sign schedule with location codes, arrow directions and mounting heights, and let them confirm per sign that it is correctly placed.

Digital job cards for wayfinding companies. A digital job card that tracks preparation, execution and handover. Example with demonstration data.

What a job card for wayfinding companies should hold.

At wayfinding companies the fitter often works from a printed sign schedule and a floor plan with numbers. For each sign they look up the right location code, check the arrow direction and hope the box of signs was packed in the same order. In a long corridor with identical doors it is easy to hang a door sign one door too far along. A directional sign with a left-pointing arrow turns out to be on the wrong side of a junction. That only comes to light when a visitor gets lost or the client walks the building. With no photo per sign, it is hard to establish afterwards whether the sign was made wrong or hung wrong.

Example
  1. 1

Open the schedule per location series

    Done

The fitter opens the sign schedule for each location series, showing for every sign the location code, sign type, text, arrow direction and mounting height.

  2. 2

    Place and record each sign

    In progress

After placing a sign, the fitter takes a photo and confirms the location code by scanning or selecting the label.

  3. 3

    Pass on deviations and snags

Signs that do not suit the surface, missing signs and text errors are reported as deviations per location code.

From preparation to signed-off card.

Open the schedule per location series

The fitter opens the sign schedule for each location series, showing for every sign the location code, sign type, text, arrow direction and mounting height. The position is marked on the floor plan. Signs carry labels with the same location code, so the fitter picks the right sign for the right spot.

Place and record each sign

After placing a sign, the fitter takes a photo and confirms the location code by scanning or selecting the label. If the arrow direction does not match reality, for instance because a door has moved, they report it with a photo rather than hanging the sign anyway.

Pass on deviations and snags

Signs that do not suit the surface, missing signs and text errors are reported as deviations per location code. The project manager sees per location series what is placed and what is outstanding. Snags go to production for a new sign or to planning for a return visit.

No more paper and loose photos.

The sign schedule and floor plans come from the project, the signs from production with a label per location code. The job card shows both and only adds the status per sign and the photo. Fitters use a phone or tablet; a printed schedule can serve as backup in buildings without signal. Deviations go to the project manager and, where needed, to production. The client remains the owner of floor plans and room names.

Photo per sign or per series

A photo of every sign makes it clear afterwards exactly what hangs where, which is valuable for complaints or later changes. It does take a few seconds per sign. A photo per series is quicker, but does not show which sign is involved if something is wrong. For directional and projecting signs a photo per sign is almost always worth it.

Fitter adjusts or reports

A fitter who sees an arrow pointing the wrong way can sometimes flip the sign or shift something. That looks efficient, but makes the sign schedule unreliable if it is not recorded. So have fitters report every adjustment, letting the project manager decide and the schedule be updated.

Label on the sign or only on the box

A label with the location code on each sign makes mix-ups unlikely, but adds a step in production and must be invisible after installation. A label only on the box is simpler, but with a box of ten identical door signs it is easy to swap one. For signs with unique text a label per sign pays off.

What goes on the job card.

Fitters get the sign schedule per location series with location code, text, arrow direction and height on their job card, take a photo per sign and report deviations. We set that up for the first installation day. Together we walk through an ordinary day on an office floor, and a day when it turns out a door has moved since the walk-through. Sending replacement signs straight to production and a handover report for the client can be switched on later.

Can fitters work in buildings without a network?

Yes. The job card is loaded before the fitter enters the building and also works offline. Photos and statuses are saved and sent once there is signal again. That helps in basements, car parks and new builds without a network yet.

What if a sign does not suit the surface?

The fitter reports it against the location code with a photo and a short reason, such as a pipe behind the wall or a pillar that is too narrow. The project manager decides whether the sign moves, gets a different mounting system or needs remaking. The sign schedule is then updated.

How do we know whether an error arose in production or installation?

Each sign has a photo after placement and a comparison with the sign schedule. If the text in the photo does not match the schedule, it is a production error. If the text is right but the sign is in the wrong place, it is an installation error. That makes repair and settlement simpler.

Do fitters see prices too?

No. The job card shows only what installation needs: location code, sign type, text, arrow direction, height and fixings. Prices and quote details stay with project management and accounts. That keeps the screen clear for in-house fitters and subcontractors alike.
