Food and specialist retail: Digital job cards for spice blenders
Digital job cards for spice blenders in the form of a blend recipe with revision: ingredient batches, weighed quantities, checks and filling for every production batch.
What a job card for spice blenders should hold.
At spice blenders, recipes are revised regularly: an ingredient from a different origin, a slightly lower salt level or a substitute because a supplier has stopped. If the operator is still working from a printed recipe card from last month, the old version goes into the mixer. Afterwards nobody can tell which revision is in which batch. Which ingredient batches were used is often noted on paper and lost too. When a customer raises a complaint or a recall question, a spice blender needs to know quickly which batches contain a particular ingredient. A digital blend recipe with revision makes that traceable.

Prepare the recipe with its revision
Each mixing job gets the blend recipe in the revision released at that moment, scaled to the batch size. The top of the screen shows clearly which revision it is and what changed from the previous one. An older revision can no longer be opened for a new batch.
Weigh and scan ingredient batches
For each ingredient the operator weighs the quantity and records which ingredient batch it came from, ideally by scanning a label. If the weight falls outside tolerance, the system asks for a reason. Every batch then has a fixed record of which ingredients were used and in what quantity.
Check, fill and release
After mixing come the agreed checks, such as a colour or aroma check or a retained sample set aside. Then the blend is filled and the number of packs per size is recorded. The quality manager releases the batch, with the revision and ingredient batches as a fixed part of the batch record.
No more paper and loose photos.
The blend recipe comes from the recipe management where the product developer creates revisions and the quality manager releases them. Ingredient batches come from inventory. Operators work on a screen at the mixer and a scanner or phone for labels. If the scales can output their readings, we take the weight directly rather than having it retyped. Whoever releases a revision is recorded by name.
Scan or enter by hand
Scanning ingredient labels prevents typing errors and is quick, but requires every ingredient to be labelled on arrival. Entering the batch number by hand works without labels but is more error-prone. Start by scanning frequently used or allergenic ingredients and widen it as labelling on arrival becomes routine.
Tolerance per ingredient or per recipe
A tolerance per ingredient is precise: salt may deviate less than a herb with a small share. A tolerance per recipe is simpler to set up. For ingredients that strongly drive flavour or allergens, a dedicated tolerance is worth it; for everything else, a general margin is enough.
Retained sample per batch or sampling
Keeping a sample from every batch makes later questions easy to answer but costs space and admin. Sampling per period is lighter but leaves gaps. Many blenders keep a sample from every batch for industrial customers and use periodic sampling for smaller ones. The quality manager sets the rule per customer group.
What goes on the job card.
Mixing recipes with revision, recording weighed quantities and ingredient batches, checks after mixing, filling and release are ready before production starts using it. Together we do an ordinary batch of a standard blend, and a batch that starts on the day a new revision is released while an ingredient batch runs out halfway. Label printing with batch code and tracing from ingredient batch to finished batches can be switched on after that.

Explore pricing and optionsHow do we stop an operator mixing from an old recipe?
The screen at the mixer only shows the released revision. Paper recipe cards are no longer needed. If a new revision is released while a batch is running, that batch is finished on the old revision and recorded as such. New batches start on the new one.
Can we quickly see which batches contain a given ingredient batch?
Yes. Because every batch records the ingredient batches used, you search on an ingredient batch and see every finished batch it went into, along with the customers who received them. That is exactly the answer a customer wants when asking about a recall.
What if an ingredient runs out during mixing?
The operator records how much came from the first batch and scans the second ingredient batch for the rest. Both are then linked to the finished batch. If there is no second batch, the mixing job is paused and the planner sees it immediately.
Do operators have to type much on the screen?
No. Most steps are ticking off and scanning. Only a deviation outside tolerance or a skipped check asks for a short reason. Weights come straight from the scales where possible, so the screen stays usable with gloves on.
