Repairs and specialist services: Digital job cards for sailmakers
Digital job cards for sailmakers: a pattern with a dimension check for each order, bringing together measured figures, checked points and changes made after fitting.
What a job card for sailmakers should hold.
For sailmakers the pattern is the heart of the job, but the information around it is scattered. Measurements are on a sketch from the marina, the pattern was made on film or in the drawing software, and the choice of windows and studs is in the quote. Whoever cuts has to check alone whether the pattern still matches the measurements. A forgotten correction, such as a moved winch or a higher grab rail, only shows up at the fitting on board. There the sailmaker jots notes on paper that are sometimes unreadable back at the loft. When a complaint arrives a year later, nobody remembers which measurement was taken and which was assumed.

Link pattern to measurements
Each order gets a job card with the measured figures, where they came from and the photos of fixing points. The pattern is attached, with a check field for each key dimension. Before cutting, the sailmaker ticks off per dimension that the pattern matches, or notes a deliberate deviation with the reason.
Record production and hardware
During making, the sailmaker records which cloth from which roll was used, which reinforcements and hardware were added and where. For a cover it notes where zips and windows sit. If a question comes up, such as a window that will not fit within the panel, it goes as a note to whoever wrote the quote.
Record fitting and changes
On board the sailmaker runs through the checkpoints: does the cover meet the press studs, does the sail sit right at the boom, is the headroom as agreed. Each change goes on the card with a photo, marked as solved on the spot or needing to go back to the loft.
No more paper and loose photos.
Sailmakers work with drawing software for patterns or with film and paper, alongside quotes and email. The job card replaces the paper sketch and loose notes, but not the drawing software: patterns are still made there, and the job card links to them or stores an export. Measurements come from the enquiry or survey; the sailmaker owns what is recorded during making and fitting.
Digital pattern or film template
A digital pattern is easy to keep and adjust, but many covers are still templated with film on board because the shapes are irregular. Both work with the job card: a digital pattern is linked, a film template is photographed and its key dimensions entered. What matters is that the check happens in one place.
Check every dimension or key ones
Checking every dimension of a pattern takes time and gets skipped in practice. Checking only key dimensions, such as luff, foot and the position of fixing points, is achievable and catches most errors. You choose per product which ones count as key, and those appear as required checks on the job card.
Adjust on the spot or in the loft
A small change on board, such as moving a press stud, saves a second visit. A larger one, such as shortening a panel, is better done in the loft. The job card records which choice was made and why, so the next sailmaker making a similar cover can see what mattered on this boat.

The job card holds measurements with their source and photos, check fields for key dimensions, the cloth and hardware used and fitting changes with photos. Which measurements count as key per product is agreed at the start. Together we follow an ordinary mainsail that fits first time, and a sprayhood where the fitting reveals a grab rail higher than measured. A link to stock and an overview of changes per product can be switched on later.

Explore pricing and optionsDo we need to replace our pattern drawing software?
No. The drawing software remains where patterns are made. The job card keeps a link or export and the key dimensions to be checked. Your familiar way of working stays, and the check is added to it.
Can the sailmaker use the card on board without signal?
The job card can be loaded onto a tablet or phone beforehand and then works offline. Photos and notes are kept and sent once there is signal again. In a marina with poor coverage the sailmaker does not have to wait.
Can we find old job cards when a boat comes back?
Yes. Job cards can be searched by boat, owner and product. When a boat returns after a few seasons for a new cover, you see the measurements, pattern and changes from last time. That saves part of the survey and stops the same mistake happening twice.
Who may change a measurement on the card?
Only whoever took the measurement or the sailmaker leading the order. Every change is stored with name, date and reason, so it is clear later why the pattern differs from the first survey. The card stays reliable in any discussion about fit.
What often connects to this.
- Quotation software for sailmakersQuotation software for sailmakers that turns cloth area, cloth choice and marine hardware into a quote with named options, so owners can see where two versions actually differ.
- Scheduling software for sailmakersScheduling software for sailmakers that coordinates survey visits in marinas, floor space in the sewing workshop and fitting appointments on board, so sails are ready in time for the season.
- Customer portal for sailmakersA customer portal for sailmakers where boat owners see and approve their pattern, cloth sample and hardware choices, so nothing is cut until the owner has agreed.
