Manufacturing and processing: Operations dashboard for rubber manufacturers
An operations dashboard for rubber manufacturers that shows batch deviations, residual material and mould utilisation, traceable to compound batch, press and mould.
Which figures rubber manufacturers really need.
Rubber manufacturers know that some items produce more scrap than others and that start-up losses on short runs are high. But how much compound is actually lost, and where? A batch with low hardness is remade and vanishes from view. Leftover compound is written off without anyone tracking how much. Press and mould utilisation is estimated. At year end more raw material has been consumed than the orders explain, and nobody can say whether that is due to scrap, start-up losses, expired compound or runs that were too short. Without records per batch, press, mould and cause, improvement stays guesswork.

Name deviations and losses
First we agree what counts as a batch deviation and which causes you distinguish, such as hardness out of tolerance, dimensional deviation, porosity, incomplete fill and surface defects. We also settle how start-up scrap, residual compound and expired batches are counted, so every figure means the same thing on the floor and in meetings.
Connect job cards and stock
The dashboard takes deviations and readings from the job cards, compound usage and residual material from inventory, and utilisation from the schedule. Every deviation can be traced to a compound batch, a press, a mould and a run. If a source is missing, the dashboard says so.
Investigate patterns
You see deviations per item, per mould, per compound and per press side by side, with compound lost per run. Click on a mould that stands out and you see the job cards with readings and photos. In the production meeting you then discuss a concrete case.
Figures from your own work.
Data on scrap and losses at rubber manufacturers is often scattered: on job cards, in a reject list kept by quality, and in the ERP system as stock corrections. The dashboard uses the digital job cards, inventory and schedule as its sources. Where nothing is recorded yet, we start there. Quality owns the definitions and readings, the production manager keeps the schedule, and the dashboard only reads.
Look per item or per mould
Deviations per item show which products are difficult. Per mould they show whether tooling is wearing or needs maintenance. An item with several moulds may run well on one and badly on another. Both angles are useful and lead to different actions, from adjusting a formulation to sending tooling for repair.
Count start-up scrap or keep it separate
Start-up scrap is unavoidable, but grows with many short runs. Counting it as rejects clouds the picture of quality problems. Keeping it separate shows how much compound is lost to changeovers, which can be an argument for larger call-offs or a different schedule. Both pictures then stay clean.
Residual material by weight or by value
Residual material by weight is easy to record and compare. By value it shows better where the money goes, for example with expensive compounds. Start with weight, because that is what is measured on the floor, and add value once compound prices are available in the inventory.

At the start we agree together what counts as a deviation and as loss. It is reported on the job card and the dashboard shows it per batch, mould and cause. We check it with an ordinary month and with a period in which one compound batch seems to produce pieces that are too soft across several items. Start-up loss per run, residual compound and mould utilisation you add once the basics are used on the floor.

Explore pricing and optionsDo we have enough batches for meaningful figures?
Even with a limited number of batches, a pattern emerges once deviations are recorded consistently. What matters is being able to trace a deviation to a compound batch, press or mould, not having large numbers.
Can the dashboard determine the cause of a deviation?
No. It shows where deviations coincide with a compound batch, press or mould. Whether that is the cause is for quality to investigate, for example with a test slab or analysis of the batch. The dashboard points to where to look.
Can we see start-up scrap per mould?
Yes, if start-up scrap is recorded on the job card for every run. You then see per mould how much compound is lost on average at start-up, and whether that differs from what the estimate assumed.
Who may change the definitions?
Quality or the production manager. Changes are recorded with a date, so figures from before and after a change are not compared unnoticed. Even if you add, split or merge a cause along the way, it stays clear from when the new grouping applies.
What often connects to this.
- Digital job cards for rubber manufacturersDigital job cards for rubber manufacturers that record the released compound specification, process settings and inspection points per order, with readings and deviations reported back.
- Website for rubber manufacturersA website for rubber manufacturers that explains profiles, moulded parts and compounds by application, so a buyer or design engineer knows what to supply for an enquiry you can actually work with.
- Enquiry form for rubber manufacturersAn enquiry form for rubber manufacturers that asks for the profile drawing, hardness, application and expected volume, so the technical review can start right away.
