Manufacturing and processing: Operations dashboard for plastic fabricators
An operations dashboard for plastic fabricators that shows scrap and rework per job and traces each deviation back to material, machine, program and operator.
Which figures plastic fabricators really need.
Scrap and rework are the silent costs at plastic fabricators. A routed part with melted edges needs reworking, a part out of tolerance gets made again. The quote had nothing for that, so it comes off the margin. The workshop manager often knows that a certain material is awkward or a machine is drifting, but there is no overview that shows it. Is scrap higher on one sheet type, on a new program, on the night shift or for a particular customer with tight tolerances? Without a link to the job card it stays a hunch, and quotes are not adjusted to what really happens.

From scattered figures to one overview.
Define scrap and rework
We agree what counts as scrap, such as a part that has to be remade, and what counts as rework, such as extra deburring or polishing not in the quote. We also fix the causes, for example melting, dimensional error, damage or material fault. Those definitions are shown alongside the dashboard.
Link job cards per job
For each job the dashboard reads accepted and rejected quantities, rework and reported causes from the job cards. Every job is linked to material, program revision, machine and operator. Missing reports are made visible rather than ignored, so gaps in recording stay in view.
Trace deviations to a cause
Jobs with more scrap or rework than usual stand out. From the dashboard you go to the job card with its notes, the program used and the material. You can see whether the problem relates to a particular sheet type, a new program or a machine that needs maintenance.
Figures from your own work.
Scrap data at plastic fabricators often lives on paper job cards or in the workshop's memory. The order system knows what was ordered and delivered, but not what was remade along the way. The dashboard reads from the digital job cards, the order system and the inventory records, with no separate data entry. The workshop manager sets the definitions, operators own their reports.
Look per job or per material
Looking per job shows which jobs lose money, which is useful for estimating. Looking per material shows which sheet types cause problems, which is useful for the workshop and purchasing. The dashboard does both, but it helps to agree who uses which view and what they do with it.
Feed scrap back into quotes
If a certain type of part consistently needs rework, estimating can allow for it in new quotes. That requires scrap per part type to be measured reliably. The dashboard provides the data; the estimator decides whether the calculation rules change. The next quote becomes more realistic without guesswork.
Show operators or keep it anonymous
Showing scrap per operator can help with training but can also feel like surveillance. Many workshops choose views per machine and material and discuss individual scrap only one to one. We agree beforehand who sees what, and the dashboard then shows only what the team meeting needs.

At the start, the dashboard shows scrap and finishing per order for the milling machines, with the agreed definitions and a click through to the job card. Together we check a period when the workshop ran normally, and an order everyone knows needed a lot of rework, to see whether the dashboard finds it. The laser, finishing and feedback to costing you add once the figures are trusted.

Explore pricing and optionsDo we have enough data to start?
If there are digital job cards with quantities and causes, there is soon enough to see patterns. Without them, recording has to get going first. Entering old paper job cards is rarely worth it; better to record properly from now on.
Can the dashboard show what scrap costs?
It can show per job how much extra material and how many extra hours were used, valued at your own cost prices and rates. It does not forecast savings. It shows where the money goes, so you can decide where intervening makes sense.
What if operators do not enter a cause?
Then the scrap appears in the overview without a cause. That is information too: if it happens often, entry is too awkward or the reason for it is unclear. We keep the pick list short and reporting quick, and discuss with the workshop what happens with the data.
Can we use the dashboard in team meetings?
Yes, that is exactly what it is for. A weekly overview with the jobs that stood out and their causes gives the meeting a concrete subject. Instead of talking about a feeling, you look at a job card together and discuss what could be done differently.
What often connects to this.
- Digital job cards for plastic fabricatorsDigital job cards for plastic fabricators that bring the released machining file, the material specification and the measurements for each job together, so an operator never cuts from an outdated program.
- Website for plastic fabricatorsA website for plastic fabricators that explains sheet materials and processes such as routing, laser cutting, line bending and bonding through applications, so a customer knows what is feasible.
- Enquiry form for plastic fabricatorsAn enquiry form for plastic fabricators that asks for drawing, tolerances, material choice and application, so engineering can judge whether a part can actually be made.
