Design and creative production: Digital job cards for picture framers
Digital job cards for picture framers in the form of a framing card with measurements, moulding, mount, glazing and special notes, travelling from counter to bench to collection.
What a job card for picture framers should hold.
At the counter the measurements are written on a card or ticket, along with the moulding number, mount colour and type of glass. That card goes into the back with the artwork. But whoever does the cutting doesn't always know the customer wanted the signature left visible, or that the mount should be raised slightly. A smudged card or an illegible figure leads to a wrongly cut mount or a frame that is just too small. And if the work arrived already damaged, that can't be shown later. Picture framers need a framing card that is complete, legible and properly recorded.

Complete the framing card
At the counter the artwork size, rebate size, mount width and colour, moulding, glazing, backing and hanging hardware are recorded, with a photo of the work on arrival. Special notes such as a signature that must stay visible or a tear in the corner are added, so everyone in the workshop knows what to watch for.
Sign off operations at the bench
At the bench, staff sign off each step: moulding cut, frame joined, mount cut, glass cut, work fitted. If something goes wrong, such as glass breaking or a mount cut incorrectly, they note what needs redoing and which material was used up in the process.
Check and mark as ready
Before marking the order ready, the framer checks that there is no dust or fingerprint behind the glass, the mount sits straight and the hanging hardware is secure. A photo of the finished frame is added to the card. The customer then receives a completion notice and the frame is ready for collection.
No more paper and loose photos.
In most framing workshops the framing card is a paper ticket that travels with the work, sometimes with a carbon copy for the customer. The digital card can be filled in on a tablet at the counter and viewed at the bench, or printed with a code for those who prefer paper. Details from the quote are filled in automatically. The person at the counter owns measurements and choices; the workshop reports progress and breakages.
Photograph the work on arrival or not
A photo on arrival takes a moment, but protects the framer if a customer later claims a scratch or crease appeared. With a valuable piece it is effectively essential. For a simple print you could skip it, but that should be a deliberate decision rather than something that was simply forgotten.
Tablet at the bench or printed card
A tablet at the bench always shows the latest version, but among sawdust and broken glass paper is sometimes more practical. A printed card with a code for reporting progress combines both. A change made after printing is then shown on the screen in the workshop.
Record breakages or just replace
Glass that breaks or a mount that goes wrong is often quietly replaced. That costs material that never shows up anywhere. Briefly logging breakages with a reason helps you see later whether it happens more often with a certain size or glass type, and whether it should be factored into the price.

At the counter you record the framing card with sizes, choices and photo, at the workbench you tick off operations with breakage, and a check with a ready notice closes it. We go through an ordinary framing together and a work where the customer picks a different mount colour after the first visit. A breakage report and the framing card tied to the schedule are yours to use after that.

Explore pricing and optionsCan the customer see the framing card?
The customer receives a confirmation with the chosen combination, the measurements and the expected ready date. Internal notes, such as on breakages or the order of work, aren't shown. If you use a customer portal, the confirmation is available there as well.
What if the customer wants to change something afterwards?
You update the card and the change is flagged. If cutting has already started, you can see which material has been used and decide whether the change is still possible and what it costs. The old choice stays visible to avoid any misunderstanding.
Can we photograph damage when the work comes in?
Yes. At the counter you photograph the work and can zoom in on existing damage such as a crease, stain or tear. Those photos stay with the card, so you can show later exactly what condition the work arrived in.
Does the card also work for repairing existing frames?
Yes. For a repair the card holds a description of the damage to the existing frame, photos and the agreed fix, such as new glass or a reglued corner. That way this work is recorded and traceable too.
What often connects to this.
- Quotation software for picture framersQuotation software for picture framers that prices moulding length, glass area, mount and fitting for each framing, so customers at the counter can compare several combinations side by side.
- Scheduling software for picture framersScheduling software for picture framers that plans workbench time, material deliveries and collection appointments together, so a customer only hears a collection date once moulding and glass are actually in.
- Customer portal for picture framersA customer portal for picture framers where customers can review their moulding, mount and glazing choices, follow the status of their frame and receive a completion notice with a collection slot.
