Manufacturing and processing: Digital job cards for glass processors

Digital job cards for glass processors that show the final measurement sheet for each pane, with edge finish, holes and cut-outs, and record every process and check as it is signed off.

Digital job cards for glass processors. A digital job card that tracks preparation, execution and handover. Example with demonstration data.

What a job card for glass processors should hold.

At glass processors the measurement sheet is the working document. It lists for each pane the size, edge finish and the position of holes and cut-outs. But the sheet sometimes changes after it was first issued: the customer corrects a size, a cut-out moves. If an old printout is lying at the edging station, work goes ahead on a size that is no longer right. With plain float glass that costs a new pane; with toughened or laminated glass it also costs the wait for the next batch. Often nobody records who checked that the holes were in the right place before the pane went into the furnace, even though that is the last moment a mistake is cheap to fix.

Example
  1. 1

    Pane with final measurement sheet

    Done

Each pane gets a job card showing the final measurement sheet: sizes, glass type, thickness, edge finish per side and the position of holes and cut-outs with a sketch.

  2. 2

    Sign off each workstation

    In progress

At every workstation, such as the cutting table, edging line and drilling station, the operator signs off the pane when the process is done.

  3. 3

    Check before tempering or packing

    Next

Before a pane goes into the furnace, someone checks sizes, holes and cut-outs against the measurement sheet and signs off.

From preparation to signed-off card.

Pane with final measurement sheet

Each pane gets a job card showing the final measurement sheet: sizes, glass type, thickness, edge finish per side and the position of holes and cut-outs with a sketch. A sheet that has not been released does not appear on the floor. If a size changes after release, the old card is withdrawn and the floor gets an alert.

Sign off each workstation

At every workstation, such as the cutting table, edging line and drilling station, the operator signs off the pane when the process is done. A deviation, such as a shell chip on the edge or a hole slightly off, is recorded with a short reason and a photo. You can see per pane how far it has got and what happened.

Check before tempering or packing

Before a pane goes into the furnace, someone checks sizes, holes and cut-outs against the measurement sheet and signs off. Only then can the pane join a batch. After tempering a visual check follows and the pane goes onto a transport rack, with its position on the rack recorded.

No more paper and loose photos.

Glass processors usually keep the measurement sheet in the order system, drive the cutting table from a cutting optimisation program and print job cards or labels per pane. The digital job card uses the same pane data and the same label or barcode, so a scan brings up the right pane and no second label is needed. The sales office owns the measurement sheet, production engineering owns release and each operator owns their sign-off.

Label on the pane or list per station

A barcode label on every pane allows scanning at each station and prevents mix-ups between panes that look alike. A list per station is simpler but leaves room for errors when many sizes are the same. With toughened glass the label has to survive tempering or be reapplied after the furnace.

Check by the operator or a second person

Operators know their own work best but sometimes miss their own mistakes. A second person before the furnace catches more errors but takes time. Many processors use a second check only for panes with cut-outs or complex shapes, where a mistake is most expensive. The check itself is signed off on the card.

Photo of every pane or only deviations

A photo of every pane before dispatch provides evidence in a damage claim but takes time and storage. Photographing only deviations is more efficient. Some processors photograph panes for large projects or customers with previous claims as standard, and otherwise only deviations, keeping the extra effort to where it counts.

What goes on the job card.

At the start, the job card shows the final measurement sheet per pane, every workstation signs off and a check before toughening is mandatory. Before the floor uses it, we walk through an ordinary order together and an order where the customer moves a cut-out after the glass is cut but not yet toughened. The check after toughening, the rack position and photos at dispatch you switch on afterwards.

How do we stop an old measurement sheet being used?

The job card only shows the most recently released sheet. If a size changes, the old card is withdrawn and the operator sees a new version when scanning the pane. If the pane was already cut to the old size, the system reports that to production engineering.

Does scanning work with wet hands at the edging line?

That depends on the scanner, not the software. For wet processes, splash-proof scanners or a scanner fixed beside the machine are common. Signing off takes one scan and one button, so the operator does not have to interrupt the work.

Can we see per pane who processed it?

Yes, every sign-off is recorded with workstation, operator and time. With a complaint about an edge or a hole you can trace where the pane was processed and whether the pre-tempering check was done. The aim is learning, not finding someone to blame.

What happens to a pane rejected at a check?

The pane is rejected with a reason and the job card goes back to production engineering. They decide whether it can still be corrected, for example by regrinding an edge, or has to be cut again. The schedule sees the remake immediately.
