EV charger installers work with expensive devices and a lot of cable. Charging units from various brands and versions sit in the warehouse, some already promised to a customer, others still free. Cable comes on drums and is cut per job, so nobody knows exactly how many metres are left on a drum. Circuit breakers, residual current devices and energy meters are in the vans. An electrician leaves with a unit meant for another customer, or stands at the board without the right residual current device. With returns or faulty units it is unclear which serial number was at which customer, which makes warranty handling with the manufacturer difficult.

From receipt to use.
Identify units and cable
Every charging unit is registered by serial number on receipt, with type and version. Cable is tracked per drum with type and estimated remaining length. Fuse box parts and energy meters are items with a minimum stock per location, so you can see what is in the warehouse and in each van.
Reserve per job
For a scheduled job a unit is reserved by serial number, together with the expected cable length and the parts for the board. Reserved units no longer count as free. If a type is missing, it goes on the order list with the date it is needed. You also see which jobs are waiting for which delivery.
Update usage and returns
After installation the electrician books out the unit fitted, the cable metres used and the parts through the job card. The serial number is linked to the charger and the customer. A faulty unit is registered as a return with a reason, so warranty handling with the manufacturer stays linked to the original installation.

Stock is now often kept in a spreadsheet or the accounting package, with orders placed through the wholesaler or directly with the manufacturer. The inventory software reads items from the wholesaler and registers serial numbers on receipt. Usage comes from the job cards, purchasing goes to the accounting package. The buyer owns items, minimum levels and returns; the electrician owns their van stock. Serial numbers can be read with a scanner or phone camera.
Units in stock or ordered per job
Units in stock allow quick delivery but tie up money and risk a model being discontinued. Ordering per job is safer but makes you dependent on lead times. A small stock of the most requested version, with the rest ordered per job, is a workable balance for many installers.
Track cable by metre or by drum
Booking out cable by the metre is precise, but electricians often estimate. Tracking per drum with a rough remaining length is simpler and stops you starting a job with a drum that turns out too short. At a stock count you measure what is left. For expensive cable types more precision can be worthwhile.
Serial number on receipt or on installation
Registering on receipt takes time in the warehouse but makes reserving by serial number possible. Registering only on installation is quicker, but then you do not know in advance which unit goes to which customer. For pricier units and business projects with several points, registering on receipt usually pays off.

The serial number is linked to the charger and the customer at installation. With a fault or warranty question you search by customer or serial number and immediately see the installation date, the electrician and the settings. That makes a claim to the manufacturer concrete.
Can electricians see whether another van has a unit?
Yes. Stock per van is visible to the planner and, if you want, to electricians too. An electrician missing a unit can see whether a colleague nearby has one. Transfers between vans are recorded so the stock stays accurate.
What happens to a unit the customer no longer wants?
If a unit comes back before it is fitted, it returns to free stock with a note on the state of the packaging. If it was fitted and removed, it is registered as used. What you do with it is up to you.
Do we have to count all existing stock first?
An initial count of charging units and cable drums is needed to start. Small parts can begin as a fixed van kit and be counted more precisely at the next stock take. That way you start without the warehouse standing still for days.
