Manufacturing and processing: Operations dashboard for candle manufacturers
An operations dashboard for candle manufacturers that shows rejects during pouring, finishing and packing by formulation, shape and lot, with the job cards behind each figure.
Which figures candle manufacturers really need.
Rejects are part of daily life for candle manufacturers: pitting on the surface, off-centre wicks, wet spots along the glass, jars broken during packing. Everyone knows it happens, but nobody knows where it goes wrong most. The pourer blames the workshop temperature, the production lead suspects a new wax lot, and the packer points at the boxes. Because rejected candles are usually just melted down without a record, it all stays a hunch and nobody intervenes in a targeted way. The same faults come back every busy season, and nobody can say which formulation, lot or step they start from.

From scattered figures to one overview.
Agree what counts as a reject
First you agree which kinds of reject exist and where they are counted: surface defects after cooling, wick problems at finishing, damage and label errors at packing. Each kind gets a fixed description, so a pourer and a packer mean the same thing. You also settle whether remelted wax counts as loss or as reuse.
Job cards as the source
The dashboard reads rejects from the job cards, where they are logged per batch with type and quantity. Each reject is therefore tied to formulation, shape, vessel, wax lot and fragrance lot. Packing rejects come from the packing list. If a day has no records, that is shown rather than read as zero rejects.
Investigate patterns
The dashboard shows rejects by formulation, shape, lot and week, and lets you drill down to individual batches. If one wax lot stands out, you see at once which runs were poured with it. The production lead can open an investigation, schedule a trial or adjust a formulation, and records that decision against the deviation.
Figures from your own work.
Candle makers often do not record rejects at all, or keep a list by the pouring table that vanishes at the end of the week. The dashboard assumes rejects are logged on job cards and reads material lots from the stock records. Production volumes come from the schedule or the order list. The production lead owns the definitions and any decisions taken in response to deviations; pourers and packers own the recording on the floor.
Count candles or weigh wax
Counting rejected candles is easy for everyone to grasp, but says little when shapes differ widely in size. Measuring rejects in kilos of wax shows how much material is being remelted. A mix often works best: counts per shape for the floor and weight for the cost side of the picture.
Log everything or only true rejects
Logging every minor blemish takes time and sparks debate about what counts as a fault. Counting only candles that cannot be sold keeps recording simple. A middle option is a separate seconds category, if you sell those candles in an outlet or use them as trial material.
Review daily or weekly
A daily view helps spot a problem with a new lot quickly, but draws attention to random spikes. A weekly review shows patterns more clearly. Many production leads use a daily alert for large deviations and a weekly look at trends per formulation and per shape.

At the start we agree the reject types together. They are recorded on the job card and at packing, and the dashboard shows them per recipe, shape, batch and week, with click-throughs to batches. We check it with a production week without surprises and with a situation that stands out: a new wax batch that seems to produce more surface defects. The cost of rejects and a comparison between pouring tables or shifts you add later.

Explore pricing and optionsDo pourers have to log every rejected candle?
They enter the number of rejects per batch with the type of fault, not each candle individually. That happens on the job card they already fill in. With a short pick list it takes very little time, and it gives you a picture a loose sheet of paper never will.
Can the dashboard show whether a fragrance lot is the cause?
It can show that batches using a particular lot have more rejects than other batches of the same formulation. That is a pointer, not proof. Whether the lot is really to blame is for the production lead to establish through a trial or in discussion with the supplier.
Is remelted wax counted as well?
That depends on what you agree. If remelted wax goes back into production, it is logged as reuse, so you can see how much wax is circulating. Wax that cannot be reused, for example because of scent mixing, counts as loss. That keeps the two streams clearly apart.
Do people on the floor see the dashboard too?
They can, in a simplified form such as a screen showing rejects over the past few days per pouring table. Present it as a tool rather than a scorecard for individuals. You decide which parts are visible to the floor and which are for management only.
What often connects to this.
- Digital job cards for candle manufacturersDigital job cards for candle manufacturers that record the formulation, the raw material lots used and a batch reference for every pour, captured at the pouring table itself.
- Website for candle manufacturersA website for candle manufacturers that explains candle shapes, fragrance collections and private label options clearly enough for a retailer or brand to know what to ask for.
- Enquiry form for candle manufacturersAn enquiry form for candle manufacturers that captures the fragrance, candle shape, packaging and quantities up front whenever a private label or wholesale request comes in.
