Food and specialist retail: AI enquiry assistant for butchers
An AI enquiry assistant for butchers that answers questions about portion sizes, packs and collection from approved information, and passes harder questions to the butcher.
Which questions butchers keep getting.
Butchers get many of the same questions: how much meat do I need for ten people at a barbecue, what is in the gourmet platter, how long does a rolled joint go in the oven, until when can I order for Christmas? The butcher is in the cutting room or at the counter, and the phone rings in between. Portion size questions in particular keep coming back, and the answer depends on the type of meat and the type of meal. An assistant can absorb a lot of that, but only using the guidance the butcher actually gives. For questions about allergens in marinades or special diets, it has to refer to a person.

Use the butcher's own sources
The assistant only uses what the butcher has released: opening hours, order deadlines, pack contents, portion guidelines per person and cooking tips. If an answer is not in those sources, it does not invent one. The advice stays the butcher's own.
Understand portion questions properly
A question like how much do I need depends on the number of guests, the type of meal and whether there are sides. The assistant asks follow up questions if that is unclear, then gives an indication based on the butcher's guidelines. It adds that this is a guideline and points to the order form.
Answer or pass on
Routine questions get a short answer with a reference to the source. Questions about allergens, special diets, large orders and complaints go to the butcher, along with what the customer has already said. The butcher sees them in a list and answers when there is time.
On your own information, with a person behind it.
The assistant reads from information the butcher already has: the website, pack descriptions, a list of portion guidelines and holiday order deadlines. If that list of portion guidelines does not exist yet, we draw it up together; it is immediately useful at the counter too. Passed on questions arrive in the email inbox or messaging channel the shop already uses. The butcher decides which information is used and updates it directly.
Giving portion advice or only referring
An assistant that says how much meat is needed per person helps the customer directly, but must follow the butcher's guidelines. One that only refers on is safer but less useful. Most butchers choose advice based on their own guidelines, with a note that it is an indication.
Cooking tips or product information only
Cooking tips, such as how long a rolled joint needs in the oven, are asked for a lot. The assistant can give them if the butcher has recorded them. Without recorded tips it refers to the butcher. No advice from the internet slips in that does not suit this butcher's meat.
Website only or messaging apps too
On the website the assistant handles questions from people who are searching. Messaging apps also bring in orders and changes, which it may not process itself. Start on the website and only add messaging apps once it is clear how orders and changes arriving there are passed to the butcher.
What the AI assistant may answer.
At the start the assistant learns the opening hours, order deadlines, pack contents, portion guidelines and a selection of cooking tips, and passes on questions about allergens, diets, large orders and complaints. With a series of ordinary questions and one about an allergen in a marinade, we check together whether it passes that last one on immediately. Messaging apps can be added once the answers on the site run well.

Explore pricing and optionsCan the assistant say how much meat we recommend per person?
Yes, if you have recorded guidelines per type of meal, such as barbecue, gourmet or a main course. It then gives an indication and notes that it is a guideline. If the customer wants certainty, it points to the order form or the shop.
What does it do with questions about allergens in marinades?
It gives the information you have released about that marinade and says a member of staff needs to confirm it. The question goes to the butcher. It never states whether something is safe for someone with an allergy.
Does the assistant take orders as well?
No. It explains how ordering works and points to the order form or the phone. All orders keep going through the route where cut, portions and collection date are properly recorded, and the butcher keeps the overview.
Can we see what customers ask?
Yes. There is an overview of questions asked, answers given and questions passed on. You see which questions recur, for example about a particular pack, and can improve the information on the website. That also cuts questions at the counter.
