Construction and installation: Scheduling software for stair renovation contractors
Scheduling software for stair renovation contractors that lines up survey visits, workshop production and renovation days, so a fitter only sets off once the treads are ready.
What makes scheduling hard for stair renovation contractors.
A stair renovation involves two appointments at the customer's home with workshop time in between. The survey visit has to fit the surveyor's route, the cap treads have to be cut and finished, and only then can the renovation day be fixed. At many stair renovation contractors this is spread across a shared calendar and a list in the workshop. A fitter turns up while a winder is not ready, or a customer is promised a date the workshop cannot meet. On top of that, an open staircase with handrail work takes longer than a closed straight flight, yet both often appear in the calendar as a single day.

From job to confirmed appointment.
Estimate the work per staircase
After the survey the surveyor records what the staircase needs: number of steps, winders, handrail, stairwell. From that the renovation gets an estimated duration and a crew make-up, for instance one fitter for a straight flight or two for an open staircase with a new balustrade.
Workshop and fitters side by side
The scheduler sees at the same time when the treads will be ready in the workshop and which fitters are free then. A renovation day can only be booked after the expected production date. If the workshop runs late, for example because a finish arrives late, the scheduler sees which renovation days are at risk.
Confirm the day with the customer
The customer receives a proposed renovation day with expected times and what to prepare, such as clearing the stairs and making sure people upstairs know when the stairs will be out of use. Once confirmed, the day is fixed and the fitter sees his job with the measurement sheet and the order of work.
Alongside your calendar and your team.
Most stair renovation contractors use a shared calendar for surveyors, a production list in the workshop and sometimes a wall planner. We start with who owns the date today: usually the scheduler, sometimes a surveyor who names a date on site. Surveyors' calendars can stay; the schedule reads availability and writes appointments back. The workshop's production list becomes part of the same schedule, so there is one place for the status of every staircase.
Date at survey or after production
Customers like to hear straight away when their stairs will be done, and a surveyor is quick to name a date. That only works if the workshop can meet it. A provisional week at the survey and a fixed day once the treads are in production avoids promises that later have to be moved.
Fixed fitter pairs or allocate per job
Fixed pairs work well together and know each other's habits. Allocating per job gives more freedom to put a fitter with handrail experience on the right staircase. Many stair renovation contractors combine the two: fixed pairs as the base, with the option of adding a specialist for an open staircase or balustrade.
One renovation day or split
Most customers want their stairs back in a day. With many winders, a handrail swap and painting in the stairwell, that is not always realistic. Two shorter days with usable stairs in between can be better than one long day where the fitter overruns and the finish suffers.

What we set up in the schedule.
Scheduling of renovation days is in place next to the workshop's production status, with a proposed date the customer can confirm. To see whether it holds, we replay a week full of straight flights with you, and a week in which a finish arrives late and three renovation days have to slide. Route based survey scheduling, estimating duration automatically from comparable past staircases and a view of fitter capacity weeks ahead are switched on later.

Explore pricing and optionsCan surveyors book their own survey visits?
Yes, surveyors book their own visits within the time the scheduler keeps free for them. They do not book the renovation day themselves, because production status and fitter availability come into it. They can, however, give the customer a provisional week that the schedule shows them.
What if the workshop has to remake a tread?
Then the workshop puts the staircase back to 'in production' with a reason, such as a cutting error or a damaged finish. The scheduler immediately sees which renovation day is now under pressure and can tell the customer in good time rather than on the morning itself.
Does the schedule account for travel between jobs?
The schedule lists the day's addresses in order and warns when two jobs are far apart yet booked back to back. It does not replace a route planner, but it stops a fitter getting an afternoon job on the far side of the region after a long morning.
Can customers pick their own renovation day?
Customers can choose from days the scheduler releases once the treads are in production. That way they only pick a slot that is actually achievable. An open diary where anyone picks a date fits poorly with work that depends on the workshop.
