Design and creative production: AI enquiry assistant for restoration studios
An AI question assistant for restoration studios that answers questions about bringing in objects, methods and disciplines from approved information, and passes every question about a specific object to a conservator.
Which questions restoration studios keep getting.
Restoration studios get questions like: how do I transport a painting safely to the studio, should I clean it first, do you also handle sculptures, how long does a survey take, and can I drop by without an appointment. Those can be answered from existing explanations, but they keep interrupting the conservator during delicate work. Other questions concern a specific object: can this stain be removed, is my painting worth anything, is this original. Only a conservator can answer those after seeing the object, and not always even then. An assistant must never give a verdict on them, but should pass them on properly.

Define the sources
The studio decides which information the assistant uses: explanations of disciplines, the path from survey to treatment, guidance on packing and transport, opening hours and how to make an appointment. Statements about the condition, value or authenticity of objects are never part of it.
Interpret the question
A visitor asks how to transport a large painting. The assistant gives the approved guidance, such as not packing it yourself if paint is loose, and mentions that a fine art shipper is wise for large or fragile works. For a question about disciplines, it says whether the studio treats that kind of object.
Answer or pass it on
If the question falls within the sources, the assistant answers with a reference. If it concerns a specific object, value, authenticity, a claim or a price, it says a conservator needs to assess it and asks for photos and contact details. These go to the studio together with the conversation.
On your own information, with a person behind it.
The assistant runs on the existing website and uses the explanations the studio already has about methods, disciplines and bringing in objects. Questions passed on arrive in the same place as other enquiries, with the conversation and any photos attached. The studio manages the sources and can read back every conversation. Visitors can see clearly that they're talking to an assistant, and that a conservator will answer them personally about their object.
Give general care advice or not
Visitors sometimes ask how best to keep an object at home. General advice, such as avoiding direct sunlight or large swings in humidity, can be useful. But advice that doesn't suit the specific object can cause harm. Many studios let the assistant give only very general advice and refer everything else on.
Answer or decline value and authenticity questions
Questions about value and authenticity don't belong with a conservator, let alone an assistant. The assistant says the studio doesn't make statements on these, and can explain that a valuer or art historian is the right person to ask, without naming anyone the studio hasn't approved.
Website only or for institutions too
Institutions tend to ask more specific questions, about documentation, materials or loan conditions. Those usually go through a regular contact at the studio. It's sensible to aim the assistant at private owners and general questions, and route institutions straight to a conservator who knows their collection.

With approved sources the assistant answers questions about disciplines, working method, delivery and appointments, and any question about a specific object, its value, authenticity or damage goes to a conservator with the conversation attached. Before launch we ask it an ordinary question about transporting a painting, and whether a stain on a watercolour can be removed, which has to be handed over. More sources and an overview of questions asked are added later.

Explore pricing and optionsDoes the assistant give a verdict on an object's condition?
No. The assistant never gives a verdict on the condition, treatability, value or authenticity of an object. For questions like that it asks for photos and contact details and passes the question to a conservator, who gets in touch personally.
What if someone sends a photo of a damaged object?
The assistant keeps the photo with the conversation and passes it to the studio. It doesn't assess the photo, but can give the approved general advice not to clean or move the object until the conservator has responded to the enquiry.
Can we see which questions are being asked?
Yes. All conversations are kept, showing which questions were answered and which were passed on. If the same general questions keep coming up that the assistant can't answer, you can add to the explanations. Questions about specific objects always stay with the conservators.
Can the assistant book an appointment?
The assistant can explain how appointments are made and point to the enquiry form or the calendar if it's online. It doesn't book appointments itself and makes no promises about when a conservator can look at an object.
