What a job card for packaging manufacturers should hold.
On the floor of a packaging manufacturer, the printer must be certain they are running the latest approved artwork. Job card with the valid proof
The job card is created from the order and shows only the proof with the highest approved revision number. Older versions are visible as history but not as instructions. Board grade, colour set, cutting die and pallet stacking instructions sit alongside, so the operator does not have to gather loose papers.
Settings and checks during the run
The operator records when the run starts, which settings were used and when the first good sheets were approved. Colour readings or spot checks are noted on the same card. A deviation, such as a register shift or a crease that is too deep, gets a short description and a photo where useful.
Handover to the next step
After printing, the job card moves on to die-cutting and the folder-gluer with the count of good sheets and any points to watch. The next shift sees where the previous one left off. At the end, job preparation checks that counts and notes are complete before the job goes to dispatch.

At many packaging manufacturers the job card comes out of the order system and gets printed, while the artwork sits on a server or in a prepress workflow. The digital job card pulls order lines from that system and the proof version from wherever approval is recorded. Machines that keep their own counters can pass on their numbers. Prepress owns the artwork files, the production manager owns the work instructions and the operator owns what was observed during the run.
Screen at the machine or mobile device
A fixed screen at the press is always in view and can be large enough to show the proof. A tablet or phone travels to die-cutting or the warehouse but is smaller and goes missing more easily. Many manufacturers choose fixed screens at the main machines and mobile devices for logistics.
Free text or fixed deviation codes
Free text lets the operator describe exactly what happened but is hard to add up. Fixed codes such as register error, colour deviation or cutting fault make reporting possible but sometimes force a situation into the wrong box. A combination usually works best: pick a code and add a short note on what went on.
Start a repeat job from earlier settings
For a repeat order the job card can suggest the settings from the previous run. That speeds up make-ready, but only if conditions are the same. A different board batch or a new ink supplier may call for adjustment. The card therefore also shows what has changed since the last run.

The job card shows only the latest approved proof as the instruction, with the revision number displayed prominently. If a newer version is approved while the job is already on the press, the operator gets an alert and must confirm they have seen it. An old printout can never silently stay in charge.
Does this work with gloves on and in a dusty environment?
That comes down to choosing the right screens rather than the software. Large buttons and little typing help. Much of the input can be a tap or a scan of the job barcode. Where there is a lot of dust or vibration, protected industrial screens are a better choice than an ordinary tablet.
Can we track quantities per pallet?
Yes. When stacking off, the operator records the count per pallet and optionally a pallet number. That count goes onto the job card and later the delivery note. With a part delivery or a complaint, you can trace which pallet came from which run.
What happens to the paper job card?
It can stay while the team gets used to the digital version, but the digital card is the one that counts. After a transition period paper usually fades out on its own, because the digital card carries more current information. The key point is that two versions never count as the truth at the same time.
