Food and specialist retail: Digital job cards for nut retailers
Digital job cards for nut retailers in the form of a mixing card: recipe proportions, weighed batches and packaging per order, signed off by whoever did the mixing.
What a job card for nut retailers should hold.
At nut retailers, mixing is done from a recipe that sometimes hangs on a laminated card and sometimes lives only in the head of a long-standing employee. For a large order someone has to work out how much of each nut goes into the mixing tub, and that does not always go right when it is busy. Afterwards nobody can tell which batch of cashews went into the mix or who added the salt. When a complaint comes in about a hard nut or an allergen that should not have been there, the shop cannot trace what happened. A mixing card per order makes the recipe, the batches and the person responsible visible.

Generate the card from the recipe
For each order the system creates a mixing card: total weight, the recipe proportions converted into kilos per variety and the packaging with quantities. Staff do not have to calculate anything. For a custom mix, the deviation from the standard recipe sits at the top of the card, so nobody can miss it.
Weigh out and record the batches
While mixing, staff tick off each variety as it is weighed and note which batch or tub it came from. If the weight differs, for instance because a batch ran out, they record that with a short reason. Salt, seasoning or oil are ticked off as separate lines rather than assumed.
Pack and sign off
After mixing comes packing: number of bags, weight per bag and any labels. Staff sign off the card and the shop manager can see which orders are ready. Leftovers are booked back as mixed stock, so they do not end up forgotten in a corner of the back room.
No more paper and loose photos.
The mixing card takes its recipe from the same recipe list used for quotes, and batch numbers from the stock overview. Staff work on a tablet or phone at the mixing table, or on a printout that is entered afterwards if a screen is impractical. The owner remains responsible for recipes; staff can report a deviation but cannot change the standard recipe. If you have a fixed mixing table, a screen that is always on there tends to work best.
Tablet at the table or a paper card
A tablet records what happens immediately but has to cope with dust, oil and salt. A paper card is robust but needs entering afterwards and sometimes goes missing. Some shops mix on paper and let the packer sign off the digital card. Choose whatever your mixing table can keep up on a busy day.
Batch per variety or only per mix
Recording which batch each nut came from makes a complaint fully traceable. It does require batches to be recognisable in the shop, with a sticker or a fixed tub. Recording only the mix tells you less but is quicker. The extra step pays off most for expensive nuts and complaint-prone mixes.
Allow tolerances or always report
A small difference in weight is part of working by hand. Reporting every gram would drive anyone mad. A tolerance per variety within which nothing needs reporting keeps it workable, while a missing nut or a substitute variety always needs a note. The owner sets those tolerances and can adjust them later.
What goes on the job card.
Mixing cards based on the recipes, signing off weights and batches and booking back leftover mix are ready when the shop starts. Together we do an ordinary job for a standard party mix, and a custom mix for which one variety runs out during mixing and is replaced. Printing labels from the card, allergens on the card and passing it on to invoicing can be switched on once mixing runs smoothly.

Explore pricing and optionsCan we see on the mixing card which allergens the mix contains?
Yes. The allergens follow from the nuts and seasonings in the recipe and appear at the top of the card. If a variety is replaced during mixing, the card shows whether that changes the allergen information, so the label can be corrected before packing.
What do we do with half a tub of mix left over?
At the end of the card it is booked back as mixed stock with a date and recipe. It then shows up in stock and can be used for the next order or at the counter. Everyone can see how old that leftover mix is.
Does every member of staff need their own account?
For sign-off it helps to see who did the mixing. That can be a personal login or a short code per person on a shared tablet. The point is traceability, not checking how fast someone works.
Can a complaint be traced back to a mixing card later?
Yes, as long as the order is linked to a mixing card. You look up the order, see which card belongs to it and which batches were used. That lets you check whether other orders made with the same batch might be affected as well.
