Design and creative production: Inventory software for model makers
Inventory software for model makers that tracks sheet materials, model components such as trees and figures, and stored models, showing what is on hand, reserved and actually usable.
Where stock drifts for model makers.
Model makers work with sheet materials in many thicknesses and colours, such as card, acrylic, plywood and timber, and with ready-made model components like trees, figures and cars in various scales. That stock quickly slips out of view. A maker starts on the terrain and finds the right thickness of card has run out, or that the trees in the right scale were used on another project. Laser cutter offcuts pile up without anyone knowing which are still usable. And stored models or parts kept for possible changes sit somewhere in storage, with no clarity about which project they belong to or whether the client still wants them.

Register materials and components
Sheet materials are registered by type, thickness, colour and size; model components by type and scale. Each shelf or rack gets a fixed place in the register. Large offcuts that are still usable are recorded separately with their dimensions, so they get used before a fresh sheet is cut into.
Reserve per model
When a model is scheduled, the workshop manager reserves the sheets and components it needs. A colleague then sees that the last sheets of white acrylic in that thickness are already allocated. If something is missing, it shows up at planning and can be ordered in time, not on the day it is needed.
Update usage and stored models
After cutting, usage is booked out and usable offcuts go back in. At delivery you record whether the model, or parts of it, will be stored for changes, and until when. A stored model gets a location and an owner, so it can be found quickly later or deliberately cleared out.
Alongside your purchasing and suppliers.
Model makers often track stock by eye or with a simple order list. Orders from suppliers of sheet material and model components go through web shops or email and sit in the accounts. We decide which materials and components are registered and who maintains the register. The accounting package remains the source for purchasing. Stored models often belong to the client after delivery; that is recorded per model. Labels on racks with a scannable code make booking out in the workshop quick, without walking to a computer first.
Register everything or only critical materials
Registering every strip and rod is unworkable. Registering sheets that often run out, components with long lead times and expensive materials covers most problems. Small consumables such as glue and blades can be watched with a simple minimum stock level, without booking each one out individually.
Keep offcuts or throw them away
Keeping offcuts saves material but creates a growing pile nobody searches through. Throwing them away keeps the workshop clear but wastes usable material. A minimum size for keeping, with the largest pieces registered, makes sure offcuts actually get used rather than gathering dust. Smaller pieces then go without hesitation.
Store models or dispose of them after delivery
A stored model is valuable if the client later wants a change or a second copy. It does take storage space, especially large urban models. An agreement per model on storage period and ownership stops the storeroom filling up with models nobody knows are still needed.

Sheet material by type and thickness, model parts by scale and stored models with location and owner are recorded, with reservations per model and booking out after use. The workshop manager decides which materials go first. We run an ordinary working week together and a week in which two models need the same sheet at once. Reorder signals on low stock and recording offcuts are switched on later.

Explore pricing and optionsDo we have to count the whole workshop at once?
No. You start with the materials that run out most often and with new deliveries. Everything else is registered when you use it or come across it. The register grows without the workshop standing still for a week of counting.
Can we track trees and figures by scale?
Yes. Model components are registered by type and scale, for example deciduous trees or figures at a particular scale. When reserving you see whether there are enough for the model. If not, they can be ordered in time or the workshop can make them.
How do we keep track of models we store for clients?
At delivery you record whether the model is stored, where, who owns it and until when. An overview shows stored models with their storage period. When it ends, you can ask the client whether they want to collect it or whether it can be disposed of.
Does it work with codes on the racks?
Yes. Each rack or shelf can get a label with a code you scan with a phone. That lets you book items out or back in quickly. Working without labels is possible too, but searching and booking out take longer.
What often connects to this.
- Digital job cards for model makersDigital job cards for model makers in the form of a build card per model component, holding the current drawing revision, scale, material choice and detail agreements together.
- Website for model makersA website for model makers that shows, for each model type, which scale, level of detail and finish is possible, so architects and developers send more focused enquiries.
- Enquiry form for model makersAn enquiry form for model makers that asks for construction drawings, scale choice, purpose of the model and delivery date, so an enquiry can be judged straight away on buildability and time.
