Outdoor spaces and grounds: Digital job cards for irrigation installers
Digital job cards for irrigation installers on which technicians record the zone plan with sprinkler positions, the route of pipes and valves and the programmes set, so the system can be found again later.
What a job card for irrigation installers should hold.
Once an irrigation system is installed, everything is underground. When there is a leak a year later or the client wants to extend, a technician has to guess where the main line runs and which valve box belongs to which zone. At irrigation installers, the job card is often a paper drawing left in the van, or the memory of the technician who laid it. Deviations from the zone plan, such as a sprinkler moved because of a tree, or a pipe rerouted around a cable, are recorded nowhere. The run times set per zone also vanish once the client starts fiddling with the controller.

From preparation to signed-off card.
Prepare the technician's zone plan
The technician receives the zone plan with sprinkler positions or the drip line route per zone, the location of the valve box and the controller. Particulars are noted, such as utility cables and pipes where digging must be careful, or an area the landscaper has already planted.
Record routes and deviations
During the work, the technician records where pipes and valve boxes actually lie, with photos of open trenches and a mark on the plan. A moved sprinkler or an extra bend in the pipe is noted with a short reason. The result is a plan that matches what is in the ground.
Commission and record the programme
On the commissioning day, the technician adjusts sprinklers and programmes the controller. For each zone, he records the run times, start times and measured pressure. The card goes to the project manager for approval and becomes part of the client's system file.
No more paper and loose photos.
The card works on the phone or tablet technicians already use. The zone plan comes from the quote and design, material use goes to stock and approved cards go to invoicing. If the controller works through an app, the programmes set can be taken from there rather than retyped. The technician owns the record, the project manager owns approval and the system file.
Photos of open trenches or drawing only
A drawing shows how it was meant to be, a photo of an open trench shows how it is. Taking photos takes time and discipline when things are busy, but for a later leak or extension they are invaluable. A photo at every valve box and every bend in the main line is often a good baseline.
Technician or client sets programmes
When the technician sets and records the run times, there is a sound baseline that fits the design. Many clients change it later. Recording what was set at handover helps with a later fault, to see whether the problem lies in the system or in a changed programme.
Card per day or per project
A card per day shows exactly what was done that day, useful for multi-day projects and for time recording. A card per project gives one overview of the whole system. A combination often works: daily records for hours and materials, and one system file updated with each day.

At the start the technician has the zone plan on the job card, records routes and deviations with photos and logs commissioning and programmes. Together we walk through an ordinary garden with three zones, and an installation where a pipe has to be rerouted around an unexpected cable. Importing programmes from app-based controllers and sharing the system file with the client can be switched on as soon as the first files are complete.

Explore pricing and optionsCan we find out later where a pipe runs?
Yes, if the route was recorded on the plan and with photos during installation. The system file shows the pipe routes and valve box locations per zone. For a leak or an extension, the technician can dig in the right place rather than search.
What if the technician departs from the zone plan?
That is allowed and sometimes necessary, but it is recorded with a reason. The project manager reviews the deviation at approval. The system file then matches reality, and nobody finds out later that a sprinkler is somewhere other than on the drawing.
Can we keep the measured pressure per zone?
Yes. During commissioning, the technician measures the pressure and records it per zone. If the client later complains that a zone sprays poorly, you can compare with the pressure at handover. That helps tell whether it is a leak, a blockage or a supply problem.
Does the card work for faults and maintenance too?
Yes. A fault card starts from the existing system file, so the technician sees which zones and components are there. He records what he found, what he replaced and whether the programme was changed. The file grows with the system.

- Quotation software for irrigation installersQuotation software for irrigation installers that calculates zones, pipe lengths, sprinklers and trenching from the zone plan, with assumptions about pressure and ground conditions visible to the client.
- Scheduling software for irrigation installersScheduling software for irrigation installers that aligns the excavation crew, technicians and commissioning day with the garden build, so pipes are in before the landscaper paves and plants.
- Customer portal for irrigation installersA customer portal for irrigation installers where owners and site managers find their zone maps, operating instructions and maintenance agreements, and can report a fault or book a seasonal visit themselves.
