Manufacturing and processing: Quotation software for 3D printing services

Quotation software for 3D printing services that calculates print time, material, support and post-processing per part, and records the chosen orientation and process in the proposal.

Quotation software for 3D printing services. A quotation that brings assumptions, calculation and approval together. Example with demonstration data.

Where quotes for 3D printing services get stuck.

A quote at 3D printing services depends on more than the model's volume. A hollow part with thin walls prints faster than a solid block, but a part that has to stand upright for strength needs a lot of support material and more hours on the printer. Post-processing such as removing supports, sanding or curing can take longer than printing. In a spreadsheet or an automatic pricing module, those choices become invisible. If a print turns out differently or the customer later asks for a stronger orientation, there is no way to see which assumption drove the price. A quote must record the process, orientation and finishing it assumed.

From enquiry to signed quote.

Choose process and orientation

For each part, the person preparing the print chooses the process, material and orientation on the build plate. The slicer or preparation software supplies print time and material use, including support. Those values go into the quote, so the calculation starts from a real preparation rather than a guess based on volume.

Add finishing and surcharges

Post-processing such as removing supports, sanding, painting or fitting threaded inserts is added per part using fixed rules you manage. A rush job or a material that has to be ordered specially gets its own line. A surcharge cannot be added without a reason attached.

A proposal that states its assumptions

The quote lists the process, material, orientation and finish level for each part, and records which model version was reviewed. Once the customer accepts, that is fixed. If they send a new version later, it is immediately clear that the quote was based on the old one and needs revisiting.

Alongside your calculations and price lists.

At many print services the price comes from a slicer, a spreadsheet of hourly rates and material prices, and experience. Sometimes the web shop uses an automatic pricing module for simple parts. At the start we take over your calculation rules, and the quote works with the values the slicer already produces. Accepted quotes can flow into the order system or accounting package. Rates and margins stay with you and are only changed by whoever you appoint.

Automatic pricing or manual preparation

An automatic price based on volume and bounding box is fast but misses orientation, support and finishing. Manual preparation is accurate but takes time. Many print services use automatic pricing for simple parts in standard materials and manual preparation for anything with tolerances, large dimensions or unusual finishing.

Price per part or per build

When small parts share a build plate or powder bed, you can price each part individually or split the cost of the whole build. Per part is easy for the customer to understand; per build better reflects what the printer actually does. The quote can show per-part prices while recording the underlying build.

Price in failure risk or agree it separately

Some parts carry a higher risk of failing, such as tall thin shapes or large flat areas that can warp. You can build that risk into the price or agree what happens if a print fails. Record which applies, so a reprint does not turn into an argument later.

What we prepare in the quotes.

From the start, the quote prices the parts you print most often, with technology, material and orientation per line, print time from preparation and fixed finishing rates. Together we go through an ordinary quote for a housing, and an exception: a tall thin part that must stand upright for strength and for which the customer sends a new version halfway through. Passing accepted quotes on to scheduling and invoicing you switch on once the calculation is right.

Can we pull print time straight from the slicer?

Usually, yes. Most slicers can export or display print time and material use. We work out how that is done in your software and take over those values, so nobody has to retype them, and estimates that were off become visible sooner.

What if the customer sends a new model version after the quote?

Then the quote shows it was based on an older version. You prepare the new version and issue an adjusted proposal. The customer sees the price difference and accepts again, so it is clear which version will be printed.

Can regular customers have their own rates?

Yes. You can record different hourly rates or material prices per customer, and the calculation uses them automatically. Finishing and rush charges follow the general rules unless you have agreed otherwise, and every exception can be traced per customer.

How do we account for finishing time when it is hard to estimate?

With fixed steps per finish level and an estimate per part. After a number of jobs you can refine that estimate based on actual time recorded on job cards. Quotes become steadily more accurate as a result.
