Manufacturing and processing: AI enquiry assistant for 3D printing services

An AI enquiry assistant for 3D printing services that explains exporting from common design packages, file formats and material differences from approved content, and passes model-specific questions with the file to the preparer.

AI enquiry assistant for 3D printing services. An AI assistant that answers from approved sources or hands over to a colleague. Example with demonstration data.

Which questions 3D printing services keep getting.

Most questions reaching 3D printing services are not about printing but about the file. Someone has drawn a part in a design program and does not know which export format to choose, why the file is hundreds of megabytes or why a round shape comes out faceted. Others ask whether nylon or resin is better for a hinge, or how thin a rib can be. Explaining that costs the preparer time every day that would be better spent getting jobs ready to print. An assistant can give that standard explanation, provided it never claims a specific model is strong or printable enough. That judgement stays with someone who actually opens the file.

    Write explanations per topic

    Done

Together with the preparer we write short, checked texts on exporting from the common design packages, mesh resolution, units, minimum wall thickness per material and the differences between processes.

  2. 2

    Export questions step by step

    In progress

When someone asks how to export, the assistant first asks which design program they use and then gives the steps recorded for it, including the resolution setting.

  3. 3

    Model to the preparer

    Next

If a visitor wants to know whether their own part will work, the assistant asks for the file, the application and the critical dimensions, and explains that the preparer will review it.

Write explanations per topic

Together with the preparer we write short, checked texts on exporting from the common design packages, mesh resolution, units, minimum wall thickness per material and the differences between processes. Those texts and your material pages are the only knowledge the assistant has.

Export questions step by step

When someone asks how to export, the assistant first asks which design program they use and then gives the steps recorded for it, including the resolution setting. For a program without documented steps it gives the general explanation and says that the exact menu names may differ.

Model to the preparer

If a visitor wants to know whether their own part will work, the assistant asks for the file, the application and the critical dimensions, and explains that the preparer will review it. The package reaches the preparer in one go, so they can look without having to ask anything again.

On your own information, with a person behind it.

The starting point is your file requirements, the materials table, any explanations already on the site and the answers the preparer keeps writing by email. Missing steps per design program are filled in. Questions passed on with files arrive wherever you receive enquiries now. When you add a material, you update the materials table and the assistant uses the new row straight away.

Steps per design package or general advice

General advice on exporting fits every program but does little for a beginner. Steps per package are concrete but need maintaining when a program changes. Document the three or four packages your customers use most and keep a general explanation for the rest. That covers most visitors.

File in the chat or through the form

Letting people upload a file directly in the conversation is convenient, but the application and dimensions need to come with it. Referring them to the enquiry form enforces those details but breaks the conversation. A middle way is uploading in the chat with the same required questions as the form.

Across the site or only at upload

Across the whole site, the assistant picks up exploratory questions about materials and processes. Placed only on the upload page, it focuses on file problems, where most time is lost. Start where the preparer is interrupted most today and expand once the answers prove sound.

What the AI assistant may answer.

From the start, the assistant explains exporting, file formats and wall thickness, and passes model questions on with the file and application attached. Before going live, we let it help someone who wants to export a housing from a widely used design package, and a visitor asking whether their thin hinge will break in resin. If the preparer is happy with both, it goes live. The material comparison and uploading within the conversation you switch on later.

Can the assistant explain how to export from my design program?

For programs where you have recorded the steps, yes, including the setting that controls how smooth curves come out. For other programs it gives the general explanation and notes that the exact menu names may differ.

Will the assistant tell me whether my part will be strong enough?

No. Strength depends on shape, orientation, material and load, and only someone who opens the model can judge that. The assistant explains which factors play a role and passes your question and file to the preparer.

What happens to a file someone shares in the chat?

It is attached to the handed-over question and visible only to your staff. The assistant does not analyse it itself. How long it is kept follows the same arrangement as files submitted through the enquiry form.

How do answers stay current when we add a material?

By updating the materials table the assistant uses as a source. No separate training is needed; the new row counts immediately. After a larger change it is still sensible to have the preparer try a few test questions.
