Which questions sewing machine service centres keep getting.

Much of the phone traffic at a sewing machine service centre is not about repairs but about settings. The top thread keeps snapping, the bobbin thread forms loops, the machine will not go through denim. Often the cause is the wrong needle, thread not seated between the tension discs or a bobbin inserted the wrong way round. The technician explains this on the phone while a machine lies open on the bench. At the same time you do not want a customer with a genuine fault tinkering for hours based on general advice.

Approve explanations per complaint

The workshop writes a short explanation for each common complaint: which checks customers can do themselves, in what order and where the limit lies. Think of rethreading with the presser foot up, a new needle of the right size and checking the bobbin direction. The assistant uses only those approved explanations.

Ask about machine and complaint

The assistant asks for the machine type, stitch, fabric and what exactly happens. With that information it picks the matching approved explanation. If it does not recognise the complaint, or it concerns something like a seized motor or a burning smell, it gives no tips and refers straight to the workshop.

Resolve or book in

If the explanation helps, the question is answered. If not, the assistant offers to book the machine in and carries the checks already done over to the enquiry form. The technician sees what the customer has tried and does not have to start from scratch.

On your own information, with a person behind it.

The assistant runs on the existing website and can point to the enquiry form and the webshop. Approved explanations are written and maintained by the workshop, possibly supplemented with manufacturer manuals you are allowed to use. Questions passed on land in the inbox or workshop overview. The workshop owns every explanation, and each text shows who approved it. Nothing reaches customers unapproved.

Let them try or bring it straight in

A customer who fixes the problem with a simple check is happy and saves you work. But a customer who goes too far can damage the machine. The explanations must therefore be clear about what is safe to do yourself, and the assistant should advise having the machine checked whenever there is doubt.

Suggest products too or explanation only

If the cause is the wrong needle, it is natural to show the right needle in the webshop. That is helpful but must not feel like a sales pitch. A pointer to the matching item, without pressure, suits an assistant whose main aim is to help.

All makes or only common types

An assistant answering for every make and model needs a great deal of explanation and risks giving wrong instructions. Limiting it to common types and general checks is safer. For an unknown or rare model the assistant refers to the workshop, which prevents damage caused by poor advice.

What the AI assistant may answer.

The assistant answers questions about snapping thread, loops on the underside and skipped stitches with explanations you have approved, and refers other complaints to the workshop. We put those explanations together with your technicians at the start. Before it goes live, we go through an ordinary question about incorrect threading and a customer reporting that the machine no longer runs after being dropped. More complaints and carrying completed checks over to the booking form can be added later.

Can the assistant say which needle suits which fabric?

Yes, if the workshop has written an approved explanation for it. The assistant then gives general advice on size and point per type of fabric. If a specific combination is in doubt, it refers to the shop or the workshop.

What does the assistant do in a dangerous situation?

With signs such as a burning smell, smoke, a loose wire at the plug or sparks, the assistant gives no tips but advises unplugging the machine straight away and not using it again. It then offers to book the machine in for diagnosis.

Can the assistant give instructions for opening the machine?

No. The approved explanations are limited to actions found in an ordinary manual, such as threading, changing the needle and inserting the bobbin. Anything that requires opening the machine is left to the technician. It says so plainly.

How do we know which questions the assistant cannot answer?

Questions passed on are stored with the reason. The workshop then sees which complaints keep coming up without an approved explanation. Where useful, a new explanation can be added, so the assistant gradually handles more questions itself.
