Manufacturing and processing: Scheduling software for 3D printing services

Scheduling software for 3D printing services that plans printers, build volume, material changes and post-processing together, so long prints use the night and lead times stay realistic.

Scheduling software for 3D printing services. A schedule that compares resources and availability, then confirms an appointment. Example with demonstration data.

What makes scheduling hard for 3D printing services.

A 3D printing service runs several printers with different build volumes, processes and materials. You would rather start an eighteen-hour print late in the afternoon and run short prints during the day when someone is around to swap the plate. A material change costs time, especially with resin or with filament that has to be dried first. After printing comes post-processing, which often takes more hands-on time than the print itself. Track all that in a spreadsheet or on a whiteboard and you only find out in the morning that a printer sat idle all night, or that three orders landed on the finishing bench at once. For 3D printing services, capacity is the printers plus the people, not the machines alone.

Example
  1. 1

Print jobs with time and material

    Done

Each approved order is broken down into print jobs with process, material, colour, build volume and the print time from preparation.

  2. 2

    Fill printers and nights

    In progress

The planner sees what is loaded on each printer and when the current print will finish.

  3. 3

    Plan finishing alongside

    Next

A finished print does not leave the building by itself.

From job to confirmed appointment.

Print jobs with time and material

Each approved order is broken down into print jobs with process, material, colour, build volume and the print time from preparation. The finishing required is listed as well. The planner knows what each job demands from a printer and from the people. If print time is missing, the job stays provisional.

Fill printers and nights

The planner sees what is loaded on each printer and when the current print will finish. Long jobs are suggested for printers that come free at the end of the day; short ones for daytime. Jobs in the same material are grouped together to limit changeovers.

Plan finishing alongside

A finished print does not leave the building by itself. The schedule shows when prints come off the printers and how much finishing work is waiting at any given moment. You can see that a printer is free while the finishing bench is already full the following day.

Alongside your calendar and your team.

Scheduling at print services usually happens in a spreadsheet, on a whiteboard or in the queue of a printer management program. We read orders in from the order system or quotes and leave the printer queue as it is: that is where files are sent to the printer. The planning board decides which job goes on which printer and when. The printer operator owns the queue, the office owns the promised lead time.

Printer queue or a separate board

The printer software's queue shows what is printing, but not what happens next or when the customer expects it. A separate board adds that information. With a few printers and simple orders the queue may be enough; as you grow, the overview becomes indispensable. The board shows the promised date next to every job.

Group by material or lead time first

Grouping jobs in the same material saves changeovers and drying time, but can leave a customer waiting. Putting lead time first means more changes. The schedule shows both consequences, so the planner can decide each day which weighs more. You can also dedicate a printer to one material, such as black.

Fill the plate or print per order

A full build plate with parts from several orders is efficient, but if one part fails, the whole build can be delayed. Printing per order is easier to follow but leaves space unused. Record your preference per process and let the schedule take it into account.

What we set up in the schedule.

At the start, print jobs sit on a planning board per printer with duration, material and finishing, and the planner distributes them with suggestions for night and day. Together we replay an ordinary week, and a long overnight print that fails after six hours and has to be rerun while the customer expects it the next day. Material stock per printer and notifications to the office about changes you add later.

Can the schedule see when a print is finished?

If the printer or its management software reports status, it appears on the planning board. Otherwise the schedule works from the estimated print time and the operator signs the print off. When a print fails, everything after it moves along accordingly.

How do we handle printers with different processes?

Each printer gets its own properties: process, build volume and the materials it can run. A job can only be scheduled on a printer that fits. A resin part never ends up on a filament printer, and an oversized part is flagged in advance.

Can we fit rush orders in between?

Yes. The schedule shows which jobs move as a result and which lead times are at risk. The office receives that list, so affected customers hear about it in good time rather than on the agreed day.

Do we need to replace the printer queue?

No. The queue remains the way files are sent to the printer. The schedule decides the order and the timing. The operator follows the board and loads files into the queue as they always have.
