Manufacturing and processing: Customer portal for 3D printing services
A customer portal for 3D printing services where customers find their models, versions, feedback and order status, and can upload a new iteration to the right project.
What customers of 3D printing services want to see.
Product developers working with 3D printing services often have several iterations of the same part printed. Each round they email a new file with notes like 'same as last time but the lip half a millimetre thicker'. The print service has to work out which last time is meant and which settings applied then. The customer, in turn, does not know whether the latest version is already printing or still in the queue. Feedback from the person preparing prints about a wall that is too thin gets buried in an email thread that nobody can follow after three rounds. A portal per project keeps models, versions, feedback and status together.

From invitation to approval.
Projects scoped per customer
Each customer sees their own projects, with the parts and their versions in each. A developer can invite colleagues, and you decide per person whether they also see quotes and invoices. Access is managed by you, not by the customer, and can be withdrawn for any individual.
Versions shown with feedback
For each part, every uploaded version is listed with the preparer's notes on it, such as a wall that is too thin or an overhang that needs support. The customer sees which version has been approved for printing and what the order status is.
New iteration filed with the part
When the customer uploads a new version, they do so against the part it belongs to, with a short note on what changed. The preparer immediately sees the previous version, the feedback and the settings used then, without searching through folders or emails.
Less email, the same records.
At most print services, models live in a folder on the server, feedback in the mailbox and order status in an order system or spreadsheet. The portal takes status from the system where job cards are signed off and stores models and feedback per project. Invoices can be shown from the accounting package. The models remain the customer's property; you agree together how long they are kept and who can access them.
A portal for everyone or for developers
A one-off customer with a single part does not need a portal; a confirmation and a shipping notice are enough. Customers who develop iteratively, with several versions a month, gain a lot. Start with them, because that is where most of the searching happens and the benefit shows straight away.
Feedback as text or on the model
Text feedback is quick, but 'the wall at the top left' is not always clear. A screenshot of the model with a marker works better. Full annotation in a three-dimensional viewer is possible but takes more effort. Start with text plus an image and see whether that is enough for your users.
Print automatically after upload or check first
A customer uploading a new version wants it printed right away. Yet a small change can make a wall too thin. Have every new version checked by the preparer first and show the customer that the check is in progress. It costs little and prevents failed prints.

In the portal, each customer sees their projects with parts, versions, feedback and order status, and uploads a new version against the right part. Before going live, we try it together with an ordinary iteration of a housing, and with a customer who uploads a new version while the previous one is already on the printer. Quotes and invoices in the portal and version approval by the customer can be switched on when customers ask.

Explore pricing and optionsWhat happens if a customer uploads while the previous version is printing?
The new version is recorded and the preparer gets a notification. They decide whether to stop or finish the running print and discuss it with the customer. In the portal the customer can see which version is on the printer.
Can customers view their model in the portal?
Yes, in a simple viewer where they can rotate it. That lets them check they uploaded the right version, and the dimensions are shown so a wrong unit stands out. For detailed analysis they use their own design software.
How long do we keep models?
That is something you agree with the customer. Some want models deleted after delivery; others want them kept for repeat orders. The portal can apply a retention period per project that you set, and removes models accordingly once it expires.
Can a customer reorder an earlier version?
Yes. They choose the version and quantity, and the request reaches you with the settings from last time. The preparer checks whether those still apply, for example if the material has changed since. The customer confirms before anything prints.
