Website migration without SEO loss, rebuild checklist

Protect rankings during a website rebuild with a URL inventory, redirects, canonicals, sitemap checks and monitoring after launch.

A new website can improve SEO, but a poor migration can undo years of work. The principle is simple: transfer existing value carefully into the new structure.

Create a URL inventory first

Export every existing URL from your sitemap, analytics, Search Console and crawler. Decide for each URL whether to keep, merge, redirect or remove it.

  • 301 redirects for every valuable old URL.
  • Keep or improve metadata for every important page.
  • Update internal links so you do not create redirect chains.

Test before launch

Crawl the staging site and check canonicals, robots, sitemap, structured data and 404s. Only then switch DNS or deployment.

Launch rule: never put a migration live without a redirect map, sitemap check and Search Console review.

Monitor the first weeks

After launch, monitor indexing, crawl errors, rankings and form conversions. Small fixes in week one prevent larger damage later.
